FAQ

California Catholic Counseling with Kristin Martinez, LMFT

A tranquil scene representing Catholic counseling for women in distress: a modest, light-blue prayer journal lies open on a quilted cream bedspread, with a rosary made of pale wooden beads draped across one page and a tissue box discretely placed nearby. A small, unlit white candle and a simple metal cross sit on a nearby nightstand, partially visible, suggesting spiritual support during late-night worry. Soft, diffused lamplight creates a warm, intimate circle of light, leaving the edges of the room gently in shadow. Photographic realism with an overhead, slightly angled view and a calm, introspective mood, emphasizing privacy, tenderness, and the possibility of comfort amid marital struggles, without any human presence.

Catholic Counseling FAQs

  • Do you only work with Catholic clients?
    • While my work is especially focused on supporting Catholic women and couples, you do not have to be Catholic to work with me. I welcome clients of all backgrounds who are comfortable with an approach that respects the Catholic understanding of the human person, marriage, and family life.
  • Will you tell me whether I should stay in my marriage or get a divorce?
    • No. My role is not to make decisions for you. Counseling focuses on helping you gain clarity about the dynamics in your relationship, strengthen communication and boundaries, and develop the emotional insight needed to make thoughtful decisions. In some situations separation may be necessary for safety, and we will address those realities with care and honesty.
  • Can my husband join sessions later if I start counseling individually?
    • Yes. Many women begin counseling on their own and later invite their husband to participate in sessions if both partners are open to it. Therapy can support both individual growth and work with couples when appropriate.
  • Do you provide marriage counseling for couples?
    • Yes. I work with couples who want to better understand the patterns affecting their relationship and develop healthier communication, trust, and emotional connection. My approach integrates psychological insight with respect for the Catholic understanding of marriage as a lifelong vocation.
  • How are sessions conducted?
    • All sessions are conducted through secure telehealth video for clients located throughout California. Telehealth allows clients to access counseling from the privacy and convenience of their own home.
  • Do you accept insurance?
    • I operate as a private-pay practice and do not bill insurance directly. This allows therapy to remain more confidential and focused on your goals rather than insurance requirements. Upon request, I can provide a superbill that you may submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement depending on your plan. Most insurances will not reimburse for therapy with out a diagnosis.
  • What are your session fees?
    • Individual session: $185 (50 min sessions)
    • Couples session: $275 (60 to 90 min sessions)
  • How often will we meet?
    • Most clients begin with weekly sessions. As progress is made, sessions may become less frequent depending on your goals and needs.
  • Will my faith be respected in therapy?
    • Yes. My work integrates sound psychological principles with respect for the teachings of the Catholic Church and the sacramental nature of marriage. Therapy provides a space to address difficult realities honestly while remaining faithful to your values.
  • Good Faith Estimate
    • Under the No Surprises Act, healthcare providers are required to give clients who are not using insurance an estimate of the expected cost of services.
    • You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate explaining how much your medical and mental health care will cost. This applies to clients who are paying privately and are not using insurance benefits.
    • Your Good Faith Estimate will outline the anticipated cost of services based on the frequency and type of sessions we plan together. The estimate is not a contract and actual costs may vary depending on your treatment needs and the number of sessions you attend.
    • You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate in writing before your first scheduled service or upon request at any time.
    • If you receive a bill that is $400 or more above your Good Faith Estimate, you have the right to dispute the bill.
    • For questions or to request a Good Faith Estimate, please contact the practice before scheduling your appointment.
